Test report: Pioneer DDJ-SP1 DJ Controller

Serato and Pioneer press on the tube. After the DDJ-SX series, the Ergo, the S1, T1 and the WeGo, the SP1 comes with a dedicated add-on controller, which is for Serato DJ and is mainly aimed at the DVS faction in the camp. The Pioneer Controller is therefore suitable for everyone who is armed with a compatible mixer or interface and with a laptop and from vinyl or CD control the software via a timecode signal. In addition to the sophisticated browser section and the DVS-relevant commands, the SP1 has a loop encoder, the dedicated effect zones, and the 16 multi-functional pads with the velocity response for the sample volume. Designed for up to 4 decks and remote control of the creative software components. Everyone is absolutely right with the controller if he wants to present a DJ performance, which offers remix inserts, subtle effects and personal skills. If the SP1 is considered closer, it is quickly determined that it is a solid piece. The device is Japanese engineering art. The encoders and rotary knobs are handy and also rubberized down to the browser. The Sampler fader has a good resistance so that it is not inadvertently moved and all buttons are of the appropriate size. Although the shell consists mainly of plastic, a certain robustness results from the brushed front panel, which is made of aluminum. Exactly the aluminum makes for the worthy appearance. The four rubber feet ensure the necessary stability and the compact, flat design is generally good. The manufacturers' logos are found at the front and rear. On the left there is the dimming switch for the LEDs, a Kensington lock cutout and the USB port.

The surface of the controller

On the surface there are a total of 16 velocity-sensitive pads, 37 buttons, a fader, 3 push-encoders and 8 rotary knobs. Each deck section has over 26 control elements and there are various shift functions. Only the sample pads already know 8 operating modes and there are more than fifty different control commands. For the 4 decks, the SP1 comes with over 250 commands for software functions. The dimensions of the controller are 328 times 178.7 times 47.4 millimeters and the weight is 1.4 kilograms. If there is a compatible mixer in the club, then a private effect fire can be started. Pioneer is almost the same as the width of its own clubmixer and the part closes almost flush with a desk. Compared to other controllers, there are significantly larger pads and they are also shock-dynamic. Pioneer adheres to the industry standard, and so there are pads down, effect sections up and center browser and load functions.

The practice

Serato DJ is brought together, which also belongs together. These are Itch and Scratch Live. On the Windows PC, the program requires at least 2/4 gigabytes of RAM and at least 2.0 GHz Core2DUO CPU power. Apple needs to run with Mac OS X between 10.6.8 up to 10.8.4. In addition, Apple must bring a gigabyte of RAM for 32-bit systems and a 2.0 GHz Core 2Duo CPU. The 64-bit systems require 4 gigabytes of memory and 2.4 GHz. Serato's installation file is 32.4 MB and the Loopmasters Forge has 24 samples, which require 18.5 MB of hard disk space.

The handling

Everything starts with the track selection and there is the central one. Large and handy push encoder and the button that maneuvered through the areas. With Load Prepare, tracks are parked in the preparatory list and the focus is set back to the sidebar with Back. Depending on the working layer you are loading load into the players 3 and 4 or in deck 1 and 2. It is important that the used mixer or the interface turns the player on. The different Serato views can be changed with View. The device has everything that is needed. Panels SP6, FX and REC are displayed with Panel-Select.

Conclusion

Conclusion guy The Pioneer is one of the best add-on controllers developed specifically for Serato. On 4 decks, the performance tools are consistently served and a tremendous joy is created after a short time. The device does not stop before the video plugin, the layouts and the Serato library. For Pioneer, the quality of the installed components and the processing speaks for itself. All controls have been thought through and they can be handled intuitively. Features include Hot Cue, Roll, Effect, Autosync, Slicer, Sample, Hot Loop, Auto Loop, and Velocity.
