  • 3.0 “(7.6 cm) display, 240 x 320 pixels
  • GRPS, EDGE (no UMTS)

The Nokia Asha 501 is a compact dual SIM touchscreen phone for beginners. It runs like any Asha models of Nokia with the operating system S40. It is thus a kind of transition device between simple key-phones on one side and full-fledged smartphone with Android & Co on the other side.

Those looking for a real dual SIM smartphone, should read our test more accurate to make no misconceptions. Who however, no great importance to the mobile Internet, want to spend a little money, but value on a touch screen, but could be just right.

Screen and operating system

The Nokia Asha 501 frontThe Nokia Asha 501 from the sideWith the relatively small 3-inch display that can be finished well smaller everyday things like SMS, Whatsapp, Facebook etc.. but both the screen size and the occasionally coarse resolution of 320 × 240 pixels (133 ppi) are only of limited use for longer browsing and detailed objects.

The Nokia Asha 501 Dual SIM has a fairly scratch resistant touchscreen glass, but no Gorilla Glass. The exact rate we could not check, because we did not want to vandalize it in the test. Reactions sometimes seem a bit sluggish, but not hook.

As lately the trend, Nokia has for the 501 exchange cover in very bright colors. These are good, but are not quite seamlessly – a small distance between the housing and cover remains, which is not too nice in closer inspection.

While the width and height of the Asha 501 is way nice and compact, the phone is a little thick, 12.1 mm, it is almost as twice as thick as the 6.9 mm thin current dual SIM winner Alcatel One Touch Idol X (test) which, after all, has a 5.0 “display.

Surfing: go slow, fast with WLAN

A vulnerability in Nokia Asha 501 test provides the Internet is: Unfortunately, it does not offer UMTS, let alone HSPA. Instead, Nokia offers based on a 2G data connection a kind Übermittlungs-Turbo: The so-called Xpress Browser minimizes the amount of downloaded data by being previously compressed a Nokia server.

As soon as we have not experienced in the test because UMTS and HSPA mainly offer simply different magnitudes. For low data consumption is just about acceptable, if you call for example, only from time to time one or the other site, post fast times on Facebook or tweet wants something.

For those who already surf especially at home or in a cafe and have access to Wi-Fi, there is clear: The Asha 501 has wireless high speed internet.

2 phones, the second SIM card can be changed fast

From one to the other SIM card you can switch back and forth during operation. Accessible both simultaneously, but only one of the two phones can make calls at the same time. Before calling, in SMS so you can choose a short, which SIM you want to take it. But it can be also preset which SIM to be used by default for calls etc..

Also in the Asha 501, Nokia has incorporated the Easy Swap function. This we have in Nokia Asha 308 test described.Briefly: Who still uses a third, fourth or even fifth SIM card, these can each during the ongoing operation against the second SIM exchange (eng “easy swap” means “easy exchange”.).

The phone can store settings for all five cards and recognize them when re-inserted again. By the way: Both SIM card slots you have to insert cards in format micro-SIM.

Apps, Social Networks, Notifications

Although the operating system S40 is actually installed by Nokia itself – and then only in entry-level and mid-range models – are at least for the most common applications, a few apps. These include apps for social networks Facebook and Twitter, but there are also games available. There are quite a few apps – in proportion to the amounts app in Google Play or Apple App Store is the selection but of course clearly limited.

But one remains good up to date: will appear on the lock screen alerts for emails, instant messages, and social networks.

What else is missing …

Of course, generally no one needs all the features it has to offer a top smartphone. However, there are some features that are important to many people and in more expensive dual SIM phones usually standard. Therefore, here is a brief list of features that the Nokia Asha 501 just does not offer precisely: It has no GPS, no UMTS, HSPA, no, no autofocus and no secondary camera. For the price of about 80-90 € is also one of the best in our dual SIM mobile test list on a touch-screen model.

Test Result

The Nokia Asha 501 is a touch screen phone for those who do not need a real smartphone, but to the ancient key operation have no desire. Its features are manageable, but meet in any case the minimum standards in today’s everyday life. Highlights are definitely the small external dimensions and the low price.
